Playz

Playz is a review site for people who actually put games on a table. We write about what happens after the rulebook has been explained: how long the first turn really takes, whether anyone is still engaged forty minutes in, and whether the game is worth setting up again next week. No previews built on a press kit, no enthusiasm for a game we have not played.

Every game here gets the same treatment. We play each one across several sessions and player counts, then write up the box facts, how it feels in the first ten minutes, how it holds up once the novelty wears off, and a verdict naming who should buy it. Ratings run on a 10-point scale, and the number comes from the person who played the game — never from user votes, never from a publisher: six is serviceable but forgettable, seven is one we would play again, eight and up is where we start telling friends to buy. Nine is as high as most games deserve, and a 10 should mean the game changed how we think about the hobby.

When you are choosing, start with the numbers that are not the rating. Match the player count to how many people actually turn up, the playtime to your group's patience, and the weight to how much rules overhead everyone will tolerate. A brilliant heavyweight nobody will teach is a worse buy than a decent light game that hits the table twice a month.
